Newport Back Bay is not a place for a real hike, but if you live nearby
and like the outdoors you will want to take a Sunday afternoon walk there
sometime. Many migratory birds spend the winter here. Some species
are permanent residents. Depending on the season, you may see pelicans,
snowy egrets, coots, ducks, blue herons, geese, and many other species.
Binoculars are helpful.
From the intersection of the 55 and 73 freeways go southeast on the 73 to the first offramp (Bristol St). Right on Irvine/Campus Street to University Drive, then left 1/2 block to the entrance to the parking lot, which is on the right. The visitors center is just down the hill on the left. They have several interesting displays explaining the ecology of the area, and a short video of the local wildlife is shown about every 15 minutes.
There are several criss-crossing trails in the area, so just
head in a direction that seems interesting and don't be concerned
about getting lost. The largest flocks are found on the mud flats
less than a mile to the east, while the terrain is more varied
to the west.
