From the intersection of Interstate 5 and Highway 74 (Ortega Highway) drive east 19 miles to the Ortega Oaks Store, also known as the candy store. The parking lot is across the road from the store, on the left. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking there. Leave at least one car in the parking lot, then continue on to the northern trailhead in other vehicles. The driving instructions to the other end of the trail are the same as those for the San Juan Trail
